What We Do

Roughly two-thirds of Tanzania’s population is under the age of 25, a statistic that conveys every young person’s challenge in this country – gainful employment.  Given this reality, students who come from economically, socially and educationally deprived backgrounds must overcome tremendous odds to secure work that can provide a decent or promising living.

EdPowerment comes at this challenge in three ways: strengthening student core academics, teaching employability skills and encouraging personal development.  Only the combination of these elements can lead students to the desired outcome: self-reliance.

Core Academics

English and math are the cornerstones of both classroom and workplace success in Tanzania. Regrettably most government primary schools do not provide a foundation in either one. EdPowerment emphasizes these two subjects in all aspects of its programs as it targets placements for its sponsored students and guides quality teachers and instruction at KIWOCE.

Employability SKills

Book learning and graduation documents alone will not equip a young person to take his or her place in the workforce. This is even truer in societies of limited opportunity such as Tanzania where connections too often determine one’s horizons. Recognizing the limited exposure of the students its serves, EdPowerment infuses its programs with practical coaching in the skills and behaviors that vital to getting a job or starting one’s own business.

Personal Development

EdPowerment believes that getting to know and understand one’s own abilities, family background and social environment is critical to our students’ advancement. While the majority come from broken or troubled childhoods and family dysfunction, mental health and counseling are virtually unheard of or out of reach for them. EdPowerment addresses this side of the maturing process so that our students can better cope with and solve both personal and inter-personal difficulties.
